Framed Luang Phu Suang “The Smoking Monk” Photo | Sacred Thai Monk Portrait and Blessed Yantra

Luang Phu Suang Siripunnyo – known as “Taewada Len Din” (Angel Playing with Earth) or “The Smoking Monk” – was among the beloved forest tradition monks of northeastern Thailand. He was a master whose joyful, unguarded presence is captured vividly in this vintage photograph. Seated outdoors, smiling and laughing freely with a cigarette in his hand, he radiates the ease and spiritual authority that made him an unorthodox yet revered figure among Thai Buddhist devotees.

What distinguishes this framed portrait from an ordinary monk photograph is its sacred preparation. Red Khom script yantra markings have been stamped directly onto the photo, and the reverse panel carries printed Thai kata (khatha) prayers — consecrating this piece as a devotional object as well as a historic portrait. Both sides are encased securely behind glass.  The dark aged wood frame is fitted with iron nails in back to hold the glass in place and a metal hanging loop, ready for shrine or altar display. Thai script caption at bottom identifies him as LP Suang (Siripunnyo), with temple attribution to Wat Phra Puttabat, Kushinari District, Sisaket Province.

A charming and deeply personal artifact of Thai forest tradition Buddhism, combining photographic documentation with living sacred practice.
