Antique Hand-Carved Wood Standing Buddha Statue | Sri Lankan Temple Figure | Abhaya Mudra Buddhist Statue
A rare temple statue! This deeply evocative antique standing Buddha, hand-carved from wood and standing approximately 7 inches tall, carries the unmistakable authenticity of a figure that has lived its life inside a working Sri Lankan Buddhist temple. The rich, dark patina blanketing every surface — deepest at the robe folds and base — is the natural result of years of incense smoke exposure, the same sacred atmosphere that once surrounded this figure during daily devotional practice. That history is irreplaceable and impossible to replicate.
The figure stands in a composed upright posture on a carved lotus pedestal, right hand raised in the abhaya mudra of protection and fearlessness, draped in a monk’s robe rendered in beautifully rhythmic parallel carved lines that flow with remarkable fluidity for hand-carved wood. The ushnisha crown rises to a distinctive flame finial, and the curled hair knots of the head are rendered in careful dotted relief. The back is as fully finished as the front — a hallmark of devotional rather than decorative intent.
A rare and genuinely sacred object for collectors of Southeast Asian religious antiques and Theravada Buddhist art.
