Rooted in centuries of Vajrayana Buddhist devotional practice, the ghau (or gau) is the traditional Tibetan prayer box worn as a wearable sacred vessel — carried close to the body to hold holy images, mantra scrolls, or blessed relics. This richly decorated round ghau pendant is encrusted entirely in vivid red coral: rectangular coral bar sections cover the outer ring in a spoke-wheel arrangement, while the raised inner medallion nests rounded coral cabochons around a larger deep red center stone, all divided by fine silver cloison bars and a twisted rope-twist border ring.
The reverse panel opens completely, its smooth silver lid engraved with a vajra (or dorje) motif in blackened niello-style line work — a beautifully finished detail that consecrates the interior space as a worthy vessel for sacred contents. When open, the hollow silver interior is ready to receive a sacred image, tsa-tsa, or rolled prayer scroll. A dorje-inspired finial at the base and a bail at the bottom complete the traditional ghau form.
